Franz Kafka was born in Prague in 1883. His parents sent him to schools that taught in the German language. Consequently, he wrote his stories in that language. He was well educated, earning a law degree in 1906 and was employed in the insurance industry. He contracted tuberculosis which restricted his physical activities. After writing The Metamorphosis, he brought it to his writers club where everyone had a good laugh. Soon after he had it published.

He lived with and supported his parents and younger sister Greta, by his employment as a traveling salesman. Since he could no longer work, the other members of the family declared, “What a calamity has befallen us!” Now they had to work and earn a living! When the “monstrous verminous bug” finally died, they realize that it is they that have metamorphed ... ... ... into productive people with better futures ahead.

Edward Hopper American realist of the inter-war period, once said: "The man's the work. Something doesn't come out of nothing."





He is best known for his late night diner painting, "Nighthawks."



He was intensely private, solitude and introspection were themes in his paintings.







My version of Edward Hopper's 1931 painting, Hotel Room, is a rundown seedy place. Grafiti covers the back wall. The interior walls are dirty. The bed sheets and carpet are stained. There are cracks in the walls. Not seen in Hopper's painting, there is a rat lurking behind her suitcase.
